A sharp edge on a sheet metal part is not just a cosmetic problem, it is a safety liability, and often a coating failure waiting to happen once the part gets handled, assembled, or powder-coated downstream. Most edge-rounding equipment can knock down a burr and leave a soft, presentable edge. Getting a consistent, reproducible radius of 3 mm or more, in a single pass, on steel, aluminum, and stainless alike, is a tougher ask, and it comes down as much to the abrasive tooling as it does to the machine itself.
That is the idea behind Q-Fin's Radius 3+ solution: the SER1500 and SER1200 Multibrush machines, tooled with Boeck's deburring discs and deburring wheels.
The machines: SER1500 and SER1200
Q-Fin's SER (Super Edge Rounder) line runs a multi-stage finishing process instead of a single abrasive pass. The SER1500 handles parts up to 1500 mm wide, the SER1200 up to 1200 mm, and both share the same basic layout:
- A grinding belt station that removes primary burrs and imperfections
- Four oscillating disc brush stations that break edges under light, controlled pressure
- Six round brush stations that deliver a non-directional finish and round the edge
Each machine runs 17 controllable motors across those four processing stations, with automatic height adjustment, automatic brush calibration, and an HMI touchscreen that lets an operator save and recall exact combinations of settings. That is what keeps the result repeatable from the first part to the ten thousandth, which matters a lot when a coating or assembly process downstream depends on a consistent edge.
Out of the box, these machines round an edge to roughly 2+ mm in a single pass. To push past that, up to a true 3+ mm radius, Q-Fin pairs the disc brush and round brush stations with two specific Boeck tooling components. Q-Fin calls it "The Ultimate Qombination," two brush principles running in one machine.
Stage one: the Boeck deburring disc, HERO Evolution, CUBITRON™ II Edition
The first stage is Boeck's deburring disc from the HERO evolution level, a double-row design meant for removing primary and secondary burrs and for clean edge rounding on sheet metal. This is where most of the aggressive edge work happens.
HERO deburring discs are made from laser-cut abrasive cloth flaps with a finger-like structure. The flaps are arranged in a staggered pattern, which packs in a lot more abrasive cloth density without giving up flexibility, and that combination is what allows extreme edge rounding at high feed rates rather than forcing a choice between the two.
The CUBITRON™ II Edition pushes that further with precision-shaped ceramic grain, which gives the disc its maximum removal rate. It is the version in the HERO line that delivers the greatest edge rounding, built for jobs that call for more intensive edge processing, which a 3+ mm radius certainly does. The QUICK-release mounting system lets the disc be swapped on and off the SER's disc brush stations fast, so changeover between jobs does not eat into runtime.
Basically, this stage does the heavy lifting. It takes a sharp or lightly broken edge and drives it into a real, extreme radius before the part even reaches the round brush stations.
Stage two: the Boeck deburring wheel, BLUE Edition, X-CUT
Where the deburring disc builds the radius, the deburring wheel is what locks in surface quality and process stability on the SER, especially on stainless.
The BLUE Edition deburring wheel is built for deburring and edge rounding of stainless steel sheets when higher stock removal is required. Its zirconia alumina abrasive fabric enables powerful, consistent material removal while maintaining good service life, so any remaining secondary burrs get cleared and the edge comes out clearly and reproducibly rounded.
In the X-CUT version, the wheel's special slot geometry and angled flap arrangement produce a uniform, non-directional surface finish, what Boeck calls the "No-Way Finish," while keeping operation smooth and process stability high. That is how the SER1500 and SER1200 finish a part with a consistent 3+ mm radius and a clean, non-directional surface in the same pass, instead of needing a separate finishing step afterward.
Why the combination matters
Neither tool gets you there on its own. The HERO/CUBITRON™ II disc builds real radius fast, at high feed rates, without giving up edge quality. The BLUE Edition X-CUT wheel handles stock removal on tougher stainless material and leaves a stable, non-directional finish that holds up under inspection. Run together across the SER's disc and round brush stations, they let the machine do in one pass what would otherwise take several manual finishing steps, and because the process is governed by programmed settings rather than an operator's hand pressure, the result is repeatable part after part.
For fabricators, that means fewer rejected parts at powder coat or plating, since a properly rounded, finished edge holds coating far better than a sharp or inconsistently broken one. It also means safer parts to handle downstream, and a documented, repeatable process that is easy to qualify and hold to spec.
