Oxide removal brushes and wheels
Laser, plasma and oxy-fuel cutting leave a dark oxide layer on the cut edge that blocks coating and weakens welds. Oxide brushes fit disc-style machines and oxide wheels fit roller-style machines. Your machine decides which one you need.

Brush or wheel?
| Tool | Machine type | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Oxide brush | Disc-style machines | Wire-fill brush in disc format with a long tool life |
| Oxide wheel | Roller-style machines | Spring-packed wheel that follows the sheet contour |
What can come off
Laser-cut oxide, plasma or oxy-fuel scale, weld heat tint, and mill scale. Tell us which you have and how clean the result needs to be, since a coating or weld step usually needs a cleaner surface than a part going straight to assembly.
Why remove oxide
Oxide scale and heat tint stop paint, powder coat and welds from bonding properly. Removing them right after cutting means fewer rejects downstream.
Oxide is not slag
Slag is hardened molten material stuck to the edge. Oxide is a thin dark layer on the surface. They often appear together on plasma and flame cuts. See slag removal brushes for the first step.
What we need to recommend one
Your machine and brand, the disc or wheel size and connection, how the part was cut, the material, and the finish you need next (coating, welding or assembly).
Common questions
Do I need an oxide brush or an oxide wheel?
If your machine uses disc heads, a brush. If it uses rollers, a wheel. Give us your machine and we will confirm.
Is oxide the same as slag?
No. Slag is hardened molten material on the edge. Oxide is a thin dark layer on the cut surface. Plasma and flame cuts often have both and may need two steps.
Why does oxide matter before powder coating or welding?
Oxide and heat tint interfere with coating adhesion and weld quality, so removing them gives a cleaner bond.
Does laser cutting leave oxide?
Laser cutting with oxygen assist can leave an oxide layer on the cut edge. Tell us your cutting method and material.
