Deburring and finishing stainless steel
Stainless steel needs the right abrasive and a controlled finish. A stainless specialist abrasive cuts faster and gives a better radius on stainless than a general-purpose abrasive, and the finishing tool you pick (belt, disc or felt) sets the final look.
Tools by step
| Step | Tool | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Burrs and light edge residue | Deburring disc | Choose a stainless specialist abrasive |
| Edge rounding | Deburring disc, by level | Level decides how strong and even the radius is |
| Slag from thermal cutting | Slag removal brush | Start at Hardness 1 to protect edges |
| Heat tint and oxide | Oxide brush (disc machines) or oxide wheel (roller machines) | Tell us how clean the surface must be |
| Linear brushed look | Non-woven belt | Consistent linear grain |
| Uniform matte look | Non-woven disc | Gentle finish grinding |
| High polish | Felt polishing disc with compound | Prepare with finer non-woven first |
Keep an eye on contamination
Many shops keep tooling used on stainless separate from tooling used on carbon steel so steel particles are not carried onto stainless parts. If one machine runs both, tell us and we will factor it into the recommendation.
What we need to recommend tools
Your machine and brand, the disc, belt or wheel size and connection, the thickness and grade if you know it, how the part was cut, and the look you want.
Common questions
Do I need a special abrasive for stainless?
Usually yes. A stainless-specific abrasive cuts faster and gives a better radius on stainless than a general-purpose abrasive.
How do I get a directional or non-directional finish?
Non-woven belts give a linear grain and non-woven discs give a uniform matte pattern. See the finishing guide for the full comparison.
How do I remove heat tint?
Heat tint from cutting or welding is removed with an oxide brush or wheel, depending on your machine. Tell us how clean the surface must be.
Can I get a mirror finish on stainless?
Yes, with a felt polishing disc and polishing compound after the surface is prepared with finer non-woven grades.
